Cel mai bun sportiv moldovean al anului 2011, Sergiu Toma, a câștigat o medalie olimpică pentru Emiratele Arabe Unite. Judocanul a cucerit bronzul la Olimpiada de la Rio de Janeiro în categoria de 81 de kilograme. În lupta pentru medalia de bronz,
Toma l-a învins pe italianul Matteo Marconcini, sportivul care l-a eliminat în optimile de finală pe Valeriu Duminică. Sergiu Toma reprezintă Emiratele Arabe Unite din 2013, alături de alți alți cinci judocani moldoveni.
Plecarea acestora a iscat atunci un imens scandal în sportul moldovenesc. Sergiu Toma are 29 de ani. În 2011, pe când reprezenta Republica Moldova, a reușit să devină vicecampion european și medaliat cu bronz la Campionatul Mondial din același an.
Sportivul ne-a reprezentat și la Jocurile Olimpice de la Londra. Atunci, Toma s-a clasat pe locul nouă.
