DE VORBĂ DESPRE VORBE cu Vsevolod Cernei. Despre cuvântul franțuzesc "ȘARM"
Să uităm pe câteva clipe de evenimente şi să vorbim despre vorbe – despre originea şi sensul lor, despre întrebuinţarea lor corectă sau mai puţin corectă.
Bunăoară, despre franțuzismul livresc ”șarm” care înseamnă grație, drăgălășenie, farmec.
Primul sens al cuvântului ”farmec” este ”vrajă, vrăjitorie”. Adică, nu este un cuvânt cu înțeles eminamente pozitiv. Poți fi fermecat și în sens negativ. O denotă și proveniența– în limba greacă pharmakos înseamnă medicament, de unde vine cuvântul farmacie, dar înseamnă și venin. În albaneză ”farmak” înseamnă la fel ”venin”.
Dicționarele mai precizează că în basme și superstiții farmecul este transformarea miraculoasă a lucrurilor în urma unei vrăji, iar în limbajul popular - practică ocultă prin care se influențează soarta cuiva, prin invocarea unor forțe supranaturale malefice.
Cel de-al doilea sens dat de dicționar e sinonim cu ”șarm” și desemnează un ansamblu de calități care încântă sau atrag pe cineva, dar și încântarea pe care o simte cineva în fața unui lucru extraordinar.
La rândul său, cuvântul șarm, preluat din limba franceză, provine de la carmen, care înseamnă în limba latină deopotrivă, cânt, formulă magică, incantație și vers. Deci, la origini acest cuvânt nu însemna altceva decât formulă de incantație, cântată sau recitată. După cum au remarcat etimologii francezi, nici măcar în secolul al 16-lea cuvântului ”șarm” nu i se atribuise încă sensul de ceva ce place, atrage și mișcă. Cel puțin dicționarele de epocă nu conțin nici un exemplu corespunzător. Abia prin secolul al 17-lea s-a instituit noul sens care a început să-l marginalizeze pe cel inițial, deoarece cercurile culte nu mai recurgeau la vrăji și incantații, iar restul populației contribuia mai modest la modificarea limbii literare.
Nu ne rămâne decât să ne minunăm de capriciile etimologiei: cuvântul latin carmen care însemna, în fond, descântec, a ajuns să exprime frumusețile care plac și atrag, la fel ca și cuvântul grecesc pharmakos care însemna otravă.
Marele prozator francez Albert Camus a definit șarmul astfel: capacitatea de a face să ți se răspundă ”da” fără să fi pus vreo întrebare clară.
Cuvântul ”farmec” a efectuat aceeași piruetă semantică. După cum îl definea în prima jumătate a secolului trecut etnograful Arthut Gorovei, farmecul era operația, acțiunea sau ceremonia săvârșită în scop de a face cuiva un bine sau un rău, cu ajutorul unor forță supranaturale, de care dispune o anumită persoană, în relațiuni cu spiritele necurate. Adică, desemna cam același lucru ca și latinescul ”carmen” pentru ca mai apoi să indice frumusețea, grația, eleganța și alte caracteristici eminamente pozitive ale persoanei, care atrag, captează și cuceresc. Modificarea sensului a atins apogeul în poezia lui Mihail Eminescu ”Venin şi farmec”, în care poetul le conferă sensuri opuse: ”Venin și farmec port în suflet, Cu al tău zâmbet trist mă pierzi, Căci fărmecat sunt de zâmbirea-ți Și-nveninat de ochii verzi”.
În fine, în ultima vreme substantivele ”farmec” și ”șarm” sunt substituite de americanismul ”glamour” care e atestat doar de dicţionarele de neologisme şi care tot farmec înseamnă, dar asta e deja o altă poveste…
